MFT Interns & Trainees – supervision hours no longer required for professional enrichment activities

As a result of the recent passage of SB 1575, which amended Section 4980.43 of the Business and Professions Code, MFT trainees and interns are no longer required to receive direct supervision for professional enrichment activities (workshops, seminars, training sessions, and conferences).

Prior to the passage of SB 1575, MFT trainees and interns were required to receive at least one hour of individual or two hours of group supervision in each week that workshop, seminar, training, and conference hours were logged.  If the minimum supervision hours were not met, the professional enrichment activity hours could not be counted.

MFT trainees and interns are still required to have their supervisor approve the workshops, seminars, trainings, and conferences they attend.  The BBS accepts workshop, seminar, training and conference hours that are acquired through online courses, provided that the courses meet all other requirements, including the approval by the supervisor.

Impact on TrackYourHours

We are in the process of updating the rules within the MFT version of TrackYourHours to account for this change.  Currently users receive an alert in any week where professional enrichment activities are logged in the absence of sufficient supervision units in accordance with the prior regulations.  Once the update is applied to the software this alert will disappear and these hours will be counted as Valid.

For additional information about the requirements for MFTs, visit the websites of CAMFT (California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists) or the BBS (Board of Behavioral Sciences).
